Residence Permit for Extracurricular Internships

National legislation also makes it possible for citizens from non-EU countries to take advantage of internship courses as training and orientation tools aimed at job placement.

The possibility for non-EU citizens who are abroad to enter Italy to carry out a training and orientation period is one of the special cases of entry outside the "quota", provided for by a specific article of the Text Consolidation on immigration (Legislative Decree 286/1998 – art. 27, paragraph 1, letter F) and subsequent provisions which have specified the scope of application.

The regulation provides for the possibility for foreign citizens residing abroad, unemployed and unemployed, to carry out training and orientation internships in production units in our country aimed at completing a professional training course begun in the country of origin.

The duration of these traineeships can be from a minimum of 3 months to a maximum of 12 months, including extensions.

A work permit is not required for entry for training and orientation traineeships.

Internship projects for non-EU citizens who are abroad need to be previously approved by the Regions, according to the procedure and the facsimile forms determined by the Regions themselves.

The trainee is granted a residence permit for study reasons issued directly by the diplomatic-consular representation, within the limits of a quota determined annually.

The internship must be activated within 15 days of the request for the residence permit.

This residence permit can be converted, at the end of the internship carried out, into a residence permit for work reasons, if the employer where the internship is carried out or another employer are willing to hire the intern with a regular contract of work.

The conversion, due to the effect of the new "CUTRO Decree", will be possible extra quota flows.

In Lazio, the host company must guarantee the intern reimbursement of expenses of at least €400.00 per month.

It must also guarantee:

• The activation of a nominal insurance for civil liability to cover the entire internship period (RC)
• The activation of a Pat Inail to cover the entire internship period
• Postal payment of the residence permit KIT
• Health insurance
• Board and lodging
• Travel ticket to/RA

Furthermore, it is essential that the trainee has carried out activities in the workplace in his/her own country (as an employee, collaborator or volunteer) in roles related to the traineeship to be carried out in Italy.

ERIFO, as an employment agency accredited by the Lazio Region (functional area VI pursuant to the determination of the Labor Department no. G11651/2014) for the services of "Analysis of training needs expressed by the labor market for the design of specialized learning also carried out in a working situation” is authorized to manage the entire authorization project.
